"The Bane" is what those sentient races who have been conquered by the army of the Neph call their oppressors. This fearsome army is the primary antagonist group of Tabula Rasa.
The name is a collective term, as the army consists not mostly of the Neph themselves, but many other alien species. The first and most prominent among the Bane are the agressive Thrax, but there are plenty of other races that the Neph enslaved during their crusade and use as their soldiers, servants and cannon fodder now. Also, the Bane have the technology to re-animate their fallen enemies and send them back against their foes as zombie-like bio-engineered robots called "machina".
