A skill - also known as a training - is a technique, proficiency or dexterity that a character may learn and utilize as he progresses through the game.

Unlike an ability, there is nothing "magic" about a skill. Skills have nothing to do with Logos and do not go back to the psionic powers of the Eloh. Instead, they are earthly proficiencies acquired through military training such as the use of certain weapons, armor and tools. Each skill is linked to a class.

Acquisition

A character acquires skills automatically as he choses his classes. Each class comes with a fixed set of skills. Unlike abilities, skills do not require the knowledge of any Logos elements, so they are instantly available when a new class is picked. However, they come with with level 0 (zero), and you must spend at least one training point to increase the training level to "Novice" (level 1) in order to be able to use them.

Progression

The player may improve his skills by spending training points on them. To do this, [K] to open the Skill/Ability window or press [P] to open the character window, then click the "Skill/Ability" tab at the bottom center of the window. In the skill/ability window you can see all your abilities and skills, and their status.

Each skill has 5 levels, with increasing effect. You may check the effect with a mouse-over pop-up information even if you do not have the skill level available, so you may look through all levels of skills of all classes, even if you do not have them available.

If the player has any training points available there will be a [+] and a [-] button to the left of each skill that the player may use. (Skills that are not available are marked red.) By clicking these buttons the player may increase the level of skills. Each level will cost more training points to level up:

Skill level 0 (0) I (1) II (2) III (3) IV (4) V (5)
Name Novice
Training points required for next level 1 2 3 4 5 -
Training points spent total 0 1 3 6 10 15

The player may adjust the level of skills with the points he has available. As soon as he confirms the result, it is set. There is no refund of training points! Also note that Recruit skills and ability are at Skill Level 1 automatically.

Usage

Unlike abilities, skills don't have to be dragged to the ability tray to be used. They do not need activation, but instead they are permanently in effect.

An exception from this rule is Hand to Hand Combat, which can be dragged to the weapon tray to be used as a weapon.
